Rope Name Plaque

I love nautical themes, so this rope project was really fun. Even more so considering the price!

The core is a fabric bolt holder from the fabric store trash pile. It's covered with posterboard. Then I used some rope (also from the fabric store, but purchased) to form the letters of a child's name. I pinned the rope into the form I wanted before hot-gluing it onto the posterboard. I also sprayed it with hairspray (over an unneeded piece of cardboard) before gluing. In my head, this makes the letters hold their shape better and possibly not get dirty, though actual results are questionable.

The end pieces are the same rope, formed into a carrick bend knot. I got the directions for that from You Seriously Made That!? The ends of all the rope pieces are taped with clear tape and lightly melted with a flame.

Then, on the back of the core piece, I pushed in and hot glued two little picture wire holders - the ones that come in picture hanging kits - one on each end.

So, in a more organized list, here's what I did.
  1. Go trash digging at the fabric store for fabric bolt holders with no fabric on them.
  2. Buy poster board and rope.
  3. Cut poster board to wrap around core piece, wrap, and tape down.
  4. Form rope into the name and the decorative end pieces, pin, tape and melt rope ends, and hairspray (not over the poster board).
  5. Hot glue name and end pieces onto poster board. (It's helpful to have a friend hold a ruler for this part, so it goes on straight.)
Other inspiration for this project came from this print from Laura Seaby of The Calm Gallery.

I got so excited about this idea that I made other ones for other children.
